Report Says Political, Economic Volatility Slowing Energy Transition Globally

A recent World Economic Forum (WEF) report has found that despite the progress numerous countries have made in the energy transition race over the last decade, several factors have slowed down the world's transition to renewables over the past 12 months. The report noted that geopolitical tensions, technological shifts and economic volatility have had a negative impact on the global-energy transition and hindered its progress in the past year. An estimated 83% of the 120 countries followed by the Energy Transition Index (ETI) lost ground in at least one dimension of energy-system performance (equity, security and sustainability) compared to 2023.…

Global Solar Energy Capacity Now Stands at 1.6TW

A new SolarPower Europe report has found that new solar installations in 2023 grew by 87% year-on-year to bring the world's total solar-energy capacity to a whopping 1.6 TW. Solar energy is still ahead of other green-energy sources, partly due to low prices, and accounted for 78% of global green-energy installations last year, making it one of the world's primary sources of renewable energy. According to the report, new global solar installations in 2023 reached 447 GW compared to 239 GW the previous year. SolarPower Europe’s annual Global Market Outlook for Solar Power 2024–2028 estimates that the world's total solar…

Spain’s Renewable Energy Often Exceeds Demand, Raising Concerns

Spain finds itself in an exceedingly unique position: after making significant investments into renewable energy over the last decade, clean-energy production in the country now sometimes exceeds energy demand. The European nation has invested billions of dollars into clean energy and developed an impressive network of wind farms, allowing it to generate more clean energy than its citizens can use. In central Spain, the Castilla-LA Mancha plains that were once infamous for the windmills dotting their skyline are now overlooked by the Sierra del Romeral windfarm, a wind-energy project that features 28 vast wind turbines. Ran by Spanish company Iberdrola,…

IEA Says Countries Behind in Meeting Renewable-Energy Goals

A recent International Energy Agency (IEA) analysis has revealed that most nations are lagging in the implementation of their green-energy goals. The analysis warned that despite promising to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas, the majority of countries aren't on track to tripling their clean energy capacity by the end of the decade. With the effects of more than a century of greenhouse-gas emissions becoming clearer by the day, countries must eliminate fossil fuels from their energy mixes and replace them with renewables such as solar and wind. Combining this with green technology such…

California’s Permitting Issues Need Fixes to Progress in Clean-Energy Transition

California will have to fix the issues plaguing its permitting processes before the state's green-energy transition can make major progress. With 28% of California's electricity coming from wind and solar, an increase from 14% in 2015, the Golden State has made major strides in clean-energy generation over the past decade. However, California still isn't getting this renewable energy onto the grid fast enough. The state has a power-generation capacity of 88 gigawatts (GW) and needs to add 7–8 GW of capacity every year over the next two decades to meet its energy transition goals. Unfortunately, the state has averaged a…
