Renewable energy is the key to significantly reducing the world’s reliance on fossil fuels, addressing runaway climate change, and arresting human-caused atmospheric heating. As countries continue to deploy wind, solar, hydropower, and other renewable energy sources, we will eventually stop relying on forms of energy that pollute the world. Here are some of the unspoken benefits of transitioning to renewables.
Notable improvements in public health. Internal combustion engine (ICE) cars, power plants, and factories all contribute to air and water pollution. Transitioning these industries to renewable energy can reduce cases of asthma, hospitalizations, and premature death that are related to lung and heart disease. These conditions can be caused by air and water pollution and they often occur at higher rates in regions with more pollution.
Green energy can create plenty of high-quality employment opportunities. Although there are fears that transitioning to clean energy could decimate communities that are economically reliant on fossil fuels, renewable energy has the potential to create tens of millions of new jobs. This includes the production, onsite installation, management, and maintenance of wind turbines, solar panels, hydropower plants, and other renewable energy infrastructure.
Major improvements in water quality and reliability will come from the green transition. Exploring for and mining fossil fuels typically has a negative effect on water supply by polluting water sources. Additionally, fossil fuel-fired power plants usually consume tons of water, removing it from circulation and limiting the amount of water available for human consumption. On the other hand, solar and wind projects need next to no water to function, and their construction doesn’t impact drinking water sources.
Renewables will reduce the world’s carbon emissions. Fossil fuels may have powered the industrial revolution, but they sped up the planet’s natural heating cycle by dumping billions of tons of heat-trapping emissions into the environment. Renewables, on the other hand, produce little to no greenhouse gas emissions and are already helping countries around the world cut their emissions. In the U.S., increased contributions from wind and solar energy helped the country reduce carbon dioxide emissions in electricity generation by over one third between 2005 and 2022.
Renewables can also help to stabilize energy prices and make electricity more affordable. As fossil fuels are quite susceptible to geopolitical volatility, energy prices are often affected by geopolitics and rarely maintain stability. On the other hand, renewables like wind and solar rely on free inputs (wind and solar energy) and are much cheaper to operate compared to fossil fuel-fired power plants, allowing them to sell energy at low and stabilized prices. When paired with energy storage, renewables can be counted on to provide a constant and reliable supply of affordable energy.
Fortunately, the number of companies like SolarBank Corp. (NASDAQ: SUUN) (Cboe CA: SUNN) (FSE: GY2) that are focused on bringing innovative renewable energy solutions to the market are increasing. As the uptake of those products ramps up, communities around the world could enjoy more of the additional benefits of switching to renewable energy sources.
