Amazon has signed a new power agreement backing a wind farm planned for Shetland, adding to a UK renewable portfolio that now runs past 50 separate projects. The deal with Norwegian energy firm Statkraft covers the Mossy Hill site, which is on track to come online in late 2030, and gives the developer the backing needed to push the project toward actual construction.
The agreement extends Amazon’s existing footprint in Scotland, where it already backs the Moray West offshore wind development and the 90-megawatt Chirmorie project in South Ayrshire. Together, these commitments are projected to add over a gigawatt of clean power capacity, roughly enough to keep the lights on in upwards of 1.3 million British homes each year.
Kevin O’Donovan, the UK and Ireland Country Manager at Statkraft UK, said the agreement gives his firm confidence to carry the Shetland project forward, framing it as part of a broader national push toward power generated closer to home rather than imported from abroad. With Amazon investing $53 billion in the UK by next year, the country will have access to significant capital for decarbonizing its energy grid.
Beyond the energy itself, the arrangement carries real economic weight. Independent research from Frontier Economics calculated that Amazon poured upwards of $3.9 billion into Britain’s low-carbon sector across 2021 through 2025, and was tied to as many as 34,000 new jobs over that window.
BloombergNEF has ranked the company as Britain’s top corporate buyer of clean electricity for five straight years, a track record that gives renewable developers the kind of reliable buyer they need to secure financing and break ground.
Scotland fits into a much bigger picture for Amazon’s renewable energy plans. Elsewhere in Europe, the company backs well over 260 renewable projects totaling over 10 gigawatts of capacity, part of a global portfolio stretching across roughly 700 ventures in 28 countries. That footprint runs alongside the separate $41 billion pledge Amazon made last year to invest in UK infrastructure, facilities, technology, and employment through 2027.
The company points to other Scottish efforts too, a Dunfermline site where returned products get repaired and resold, and a Glasgow hub running electric cargo bikes for local deliveries, as further evidence of its sustainability push. All of it ties back to Amazon’s pledge to eliminate its carbon footprint globally by 2040, even as the company keeps building out renewable capacity elsewhere on the continent.
It would be interesting to know whether firms like American Fusion Inc. (OTC: AMFN) have ever been contacted by conglomerates like Amazon seeking ways to diversify their energy sources in the different jurisdictions where they have operations.
