Arizona Project to Showcase Combination of Solar, Batteries in Grid Stability

A renewable energy project in the Arizona desert is combining a massive solar farm with a stationary energy-storage solution to generate solar energy during peak sunlight hours, store that energy in batteries and then discharge it back to the grid during peak consumption hours.

Helmed by Danish company Orsted in partnership with local utility firm Salt River Project (SRP), the project seeks to solve a critical problem in the nascent renewable energy space. The problem? Solar and wind power can only be generated when the sun shines and the wind blows. Unfortunately, this means that peak green-energy generation typically occurs while power consumption is low.

To solve this problem, Danish company Orsted combined an expansive solar farm with batteries to store the energy generated during the day and maximize solar energy availability. This allows the company to generate as much solar energy as possible during the day and discharge it into the grid at night when power consumption typically peaks.

A growing number of solar projects in the United States are combining solar and wind power generation with stationary storage solutions to ensure the public has access to green energy at any time, not just during peak production hours. According to industry stakeholders such as utility firms, renewable energy developers and electric grid operators, combining these two technologies will be key to ensuring a green-energy future.

Unlike renewable energy, fossil fuels can generate power as needed and enable energy companies to ramp up production rapidly. Using batteries would grant green-energy developers the ability to deploy renewable energy into the grid whenever energy demand spikes. For instance, wind turbines could store the energy generated from wind during the day in batteries and direct it into the grid during the night when demand for power rises.

Former Arizona state senator and Tempe, Arizona, resident Juan Mendez pressured SRP to adopt cleaner energy and is one of the many residents who currently draw power from SRP. Despite his efforts to push the utility to renewables, Mendez believes SRP is still heavily reliant on coal and gas plants.

He notes that while the solar farm project is a great step in the right direction, SRP still needs to do more to generate more clean energy for Arizona residents, purify the state’s air and help mitigate climate change. SRP has pledged to achieve zero emissions by 2050 but currently has plans for a large expansion at its Coolidge, Arizona, natural gas plant.

With many companies such as Turbo Energy S.A. (NASDAQ: TURB) taking up the challenge of manufacturing PV energy storage batteries, it may not take long for solar and battery combos to proliferate jurisdictions looking to ramp up their green-energy use.
