Car Batteries Could Save the EU from Wasting Renewable Energy

The European Union (EU) could use vehicle batteries to solve one of the largest challenges the regional bloc’s green transition has faced so far: grid connection delays. While countries across the bloc are bringing more and more green energy plants online, connecting them to the grid has proven to be a significant challenge.

As a result, thousands of gigawatt-hours of clean energy that could have helped the EU cut its reliance on fossil fuel imports and lower emissions are wasted every year. Battery storage already has a critical function in the burgeoning global renewable energy sector, so using it for an additional function shouldn’t be too much of a hassle.

Unlike fossil fuel-fired energy plants, which can generate energy 24/7, renewables are reliant on certain weather conditions and the time of day to be fully effective. Solar, for instance, can only generate energy when the sun is out, while wind plants are most productive when conditions are windy.

Batteries are used to store energy generated during peak production hours and then release it into the grid when demand peaks. However, the EU doesn’t have enough battery capacity to prevent the wastage of gigawatt-hours of clean energy held back by grid congestion.

As long as the Union cannot connect new green capacity to the grid in a timely fashion, millions of households and businesses will continue to miss out on affordable, clean energy that already exists but cannot be accessed. Solar Power Europe CEO Walburga Hemetsberger says the EU is currently experiencing significant curtailment and negative prices due to its ongoing grid connection issues.

Car batteries could bridge this energy storage gap, at least in the short term, until EU member states can fully tap into their renewable energy capacities. Energy Storage Europe’s deputy secretary general, Jacopo Tosoni, notes that by the end of the decade, utilities will install 30 times more battery capacity than in 2020.

In Germany, policymakers have classified batteries as critical grid infrastructure under the legal designation ‘grid boosters’, while Baltic nations see battery storage as a safety net. Batteries are becoming a key component of the European energy mix as the continent strives to increase its green energy capacity and decouple itself from fossil fuels.

Building up enough battery capacity to support such ambitious green transition goals will undoubtedly be a challenge. In addition to the scarcity issues facing the resources needed to build batteries, some EU member states also charge levies and tariffs that discourage long-term investment in battery storage.

As nations grapple with how to get renewable energy quickly onto the grid, other entrepreneurial teams at firms like Frontieras North America Inc. are working to develop novel ways to use traditional energy products like coal in ways that are less damaging to the environment. These options could ease some of the pressure resulting from fluctuating imported energy like oil.
