High Fossil Fuel Use in US Highlight Challenges of Energy Transition

Although the United States has made significant strides in its efforts to adopt renewable energy during the last decade, fossil fuels still play a major role in the nation’s energy mix. Over two centuries of using coal, oil and natural gas have made it extremely difficult for the U.S. to shake its reliance on fossil fuels, and the country still relies on dirty fuels to fulfill the majority of its energy needs. The past 10 years have seen more American power generators increasingly favor clean-energy sources over fossil fuels, causing their capacity to generate renewables to surge by 70% and…

China Focuses on Clean Energy During China-Africa Forum

China has taken significant steps to deepen its relationship with Africa by funding large infrastructure projects across the African continent over the past decade. With several large-scale projects completed in multiple countries, Beijing is now shifting gears and transitioning its African economic policies to electric vehicles, 5G technology and solar. As a result, renewable energy is poised to take a prominent spot on the agenda during the ongoing ninth Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). Starting Sept. 4, 2024, the forum will showcase China's newfound commitment to promoting renewable energy in Africa. As the largest manufacturer on the globe, China produces…

US DOE Report Reveals Uptick in Clean-Energy Jobs

A report from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has revealed that there has been an uptick in green-energy jobs around the country. The recently released annual report found that the nascent industry's employment opportunities are growing more than two times faster than the rest of the energy industry and overall economy. Of the more than 250,000 energy jobs the United States added in 2023, the Department of Energy report said, 142,000 positions (56%) were in the clean-energy sector. A statement from U.S. secretary of energy Jennifer Granholm noted that the data shows the U.S. is not just retaining but…

Microsoft Signs Mega Green-Energy Deals in Singapore, India

American technology giant Microsoft has signed a major renewable energy deal that will see it buy energy from the largest solar project in Singapore's history. The tech company signed green-energy contracts with EDP Renewables in Singapore and India's RenNew Power worth 637.6MW as part of its efforts to advance renewable-energy adoption. RenNew Power signed a renewable-energy sale agreement for 437.6MW, one of the independent power producers’ (IPP) largest-ever corporate green-energy contracts, while Microsoft's deal with EDP Renewables will allow it to purchase 100% of the solar energy generated in Singapore’s largest solar project. With Microsoft consuming copious amounts of energy…

Innovation Essential to Ensuring Future of Clean Energy

As the world races to transition away from fossil fuels, such as oil and natural gas, to renewable alternatives such as solar, innovation will be key to ensuring that the young green-energy industry has a future. Dozens of countries have already made significant progress in the transition, particularly in Europe, and the costs involved in building solar photovoltaic (PV) modules have dropped by more than 95% over the past several decades. Solar energy accounts for the majority of the world's green-energy capacity, followed by wind, thermal, hydropower and nuclear energy. While scientists are working hard to optimize solar technology and…

Economic Incentives Trounce Rational Arguments in Driving Clean-Energy Transition

Proponents of renewable energy are increasingly relying on economic incentives rather than rational arguments to drive the global transition to green energy. As climate policies in developed nations with the most sway in the global transition to green energy increasingly come under attack, economic incentives may offer a means of driving the energy transition without becoming a target for populist rhetoric. Rather than making rational arguments about the benefits of convincing regular citizens to adopt renewable-energy technology and support the transition away from fossil fuels to cleaner alternatives, economic incentives could be more effective at getting the job done. According…

New Report Identifies Green-Energy Gap Standing in Way of Climate Goals

A new Rockefeller Foundation report has revealed that the world is facing a major green-energy gap that could potentially prevent it from achieving established renewable-energy goals. The findings point to a massive green power gap that's nearly two times larger than America's annual renewables capacity and underscored the pressing need for green energy in 72 nations. According to the Rockefeller Foundation's report, 72 countries in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and the Middle East face an 8,700 terawatt-hour (TWh) renewable energy gap. The report states that this significant energy gap currently affects a whopping 3.8 billion people worldwide,…

New Technologies, Practices Help to Transform Clean-Energy Sector

Replacing fossil fuels with renewables will be one of the globe’s most challenging and rewarding undertakings of this century. Dozens of countries have already taken significant steps to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and cut their greenhouse-gas emissions, but the world is still quite a way from carbon neutrality. New technologies and practices could be the key to transforming the fledgling green-energy industry and accelerating the adoption of renewables. Clean energy is already responsible for powering a growing share of the world's energy needs, especially in the European Union, where countries such as Norway are leaps and bounds ahead…
