Critics Accuse Trump of Killing Clean Energy, Triggering Higher Electricity Bills

Critics are accusing the Trump administration of using taxpayer money to kill locally produced clean energy and force higher electricity bills on Americans. The federal government has either stalled or outright blocked 170 onshore and offshore wind projects across the country using stop-work orders and permit freezes. Developers of projects that couldn’t be shut down using these means were paid to shut them down, with the government spending $2.7 billion in this endeavor.

At the same time, the Trump administration has invested $1.125 billion in pushing coal when the globally agreed messaging is that countries should be cutting their coal use, not increasing it.

Critics say the administration’s actions have led to higher household energy bills and inadvertently supported the fossil fuel companies that, coincidentally, donated to President Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. This is despite the fact that the president based part of his campaign on elevating working-class Americans and promised to cut energy costs.

Former Washington state governor Jay Inslee says President Trump is imposing higher energy bills on Americans by blocking renewable electricity, all while enriching ‘his cronies’ using taxpayer funds.

The president has made his disdain for clean energy clear, going as far as to call renewables a scam, and has gone out of his way to support fossil fuels. Ironically, the administration is working against locally produced renewable energy during a global energy crisis that has laid bare the ramifications of relying on imported fossil fuel energy.

The administration has largely conducted this campaign through the Departments of the Interior and Defense, with the former paying 4 energy companies for the cancelation of 8 offshore wind projects. Furthermore, these companies had to pledge to invest in fossil fuel-fired energy.

The U.S. government is essentially using tax dollars to pay energy companies to halt renewable energy production in favor of fossil fuels, drawing the ire of several states that are suing the government.

This is the first time the U.S. federal government has paid energy companies to give up energy leases that were legally acquired, Center for American Progress’s senior director for conservation policy Jenny Rowland-Shea says. She argues that the federal government is blocking a class of energy even though the U.S. is currently facing unprecedented energy demand, especially on an industrial scale.

America’s rapidly growing data center industry is using up increasingly larger amounts of energy, with some large tech companies consuming enough energy to power a midsized city. It is now up to for-profit renewable energy businesses like Turbo Energy S.A. (NASDAQ: TURB) to make their own inroads into the American market without expecting any policy support from the current administration in Washington.
