Gulf Oil Money is Being Channeled into African Renewable Energy

Capital from the Gulf is streaming into Africa’s fledgling clean energy industry at an accelerated pace as the war between the U.S., Israel, and Iran heats up. The conflict has exposed how vulnerable global commodity flows remain to disruption along critical maritime routes. That vulnerability is now pushing long-term investors toward energy assets in regions where supply does not hinge on any single corridor staying open.

A Clean Air Task Force report released last month put Gulf investment in African renewables at just over $101 billion by the close of 2024. The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain were among the leading contributors.

That capital has not been distributed evenly, with North Africa, the south and parts of the east absorbing most of the activity, while the western region has attracted a fraction of what its size and population might suggest.

Africa’s energy fundamentals give the investment case an unusual degree of clarity. Hundreds of millions of people are still without dependable power and expanding cities and growing industrial activity are driving consumption faster than supply can keep pace with. Matthew Tilleard, chief executive of Nairobi-based CrossBoundary Energy, said individual transactions can be set back by periods of instability.

The structural scale of Africa’s energy challenge makes this one of the most compelling long-horizon infrastructure opportunities anywhere.

The motivations driving Gulf capital toward Africa extend beyond pure financial return. Energy analyst Joab Okanda said the conflict has turned a previously theoretical argument about fossil fuel exposure into something tangible and immediate.

He added that much of the capital flowing into African clean energy comes from state-backed institutions managing their transition away from oil dependence. Louw Nelson, a political analyst at Oxford Economics, said programs years in development will not be unwound by short-term geopolitical friction.

Minerals give the investment rationale an additional layer that goes beyond electricity. Africa holds reserves of the raw materials that battery production and high-technology manufacturing require at increasing scale. Those reserves are not evenly distributed across the world.

Tilleard said proximity to mining operations gives Gulf investors access to supply chains whose strategic value far exceeds the energy asset itself. What registers as a straightforward power project in one column functions as industrial positioning in another.

Not every part of the continent is drawing capital equally. Okanda identified erratic monetary conditions and regulatory unpredictability in West Africa as factors directing investment toward more stable markets.

He also pointed to a problem that financing alone cannot resolve. Power generation is only viable where grid and commercial infrastructure to move and sell electricity already exist. Europe is pressing its own case in the sector. The EU directed more than 600 million euros ($691 million) toward African renewables through its Global Gateway program in late 2025.

A time may come when firms like GeoSolar Technologies Inc. currently operating in North America start weighing the possibility of expanding into Africa and other Global South markets where opportunities for growth could be higher than those in more advanced markets.
