How to Minimize E-Waste While Retrofitting Clean Energy in Older Homes

With renewable sources of energy becoming more and more ubiquitous across the world, the transition to green energy poses a unique challenge: how to electrify critical industries without contributing to the worsening global e-waste issue.

In the UK, where a large portion of Europe’s oldest homes are located, bringing them up to date with modern technology could potentially exacerbate e-waste issues in the country as at least 50% of its homes have notably poor thermal efficiency. Retrofitting them with clean energy without contributing to e-waste problems will be a major goal for the UK and other territories.

Houses in the UK tend to be constructed of stone due to its natural insulation properties. When paired with fossil-fuel-powered heating, these homes can make a notable contribution to natural greenhouse gas emission levels.

As Europe continues to grapple with an unprecedented heatwave, the need for efficient and environmentally friendly air conditioning has become even greater. The UK just has to ensure the transition from fossil-fuel-fired heating to renewable heating and cooling doesn’t increase e-waste pollution levels in the country.

This transition is set to speed up as the UK looks to incorporate technologies such as solar panels, heat pumps, and battery storage in older homes across the country. In addition to cutting heating-related emissions, such a move would help lower household energy prices and give UK homes a buffer against volatile international energy markets.

Even so, the country will ensure the transition is handled effectively enough over the long term to ensure the UK doesn’t trade air pollution for land and water pollution from e-waste. One of the first moves will involve improving and upgrading building materials and equipment as needed to ensure continued use and re-use.

This includes ensuring solar panels, batteries, and heat pumps are in good condition during their lifetimes and are upgraded when the time comes. Household green technologies may have their lifespans constrained by factors such as spare part and repair services availability, and the UK may even find itself becoming reliant on imports if it ramps up the rollout of home solar and the like.

This would, in turn, expose the UK market to fragile international supply chains and give China, currently the largest player in renewable infrastructure manufacturing, an undue advantage in the UK market.

Considering the full ecological consequences of using certain materials and tools will be key as the UK works to modernize its old homes. How technologies such as solar and heat pumps are developed, built, moved, set up, maintained, and ultimately set aside for tertiary applications will determine whether the UK is flooded with e-waste over the next decade.

Homeowners in the country can speak to professionals to figure out the retrofit solutions that fit them best, and take advantage of grants and subsidies provided by the UK government.

This approach is applicable around the world, and companies like GeoSolar Technologies Inc. have an opportunity to play a leading role in this transition within the markets they serve in North America.
