IEA Chief Commends China’s Role in Accelerating the Energy Transition Globally

Fatih Birol, executive director of the International Energy Agency, has credited China with driving meaningful progress in the global energy transition, saying the country’s clean energy achievements have set a pace that other economies have struggled to match. Birol made the remarks at the Berlin Global Dialogue, where the energy market upheaval following the outbreak of Middle East hostilities dominated the agenda.

Since March, the world has been navigating an energy security crisis without recent precedent, one that struck two supply channels at once and plunged the global energy supply chain into chaos. Supply into Europe from western Russia dried up at the same time that fuel moving through Hormuz toward Asian buyers came under sustained pressure. The simultaneous failure of both routes produced market stress that took the IEA’s full toolkit to address.

On March 11, the agency directed member nations to draw down a combined 400 million barrels from their strategic stockpiles, a coordinated move that helped settle prices after an initial surge. Birol was careful to frame the intervention narrowly, arguing that drawing down reserves can blunt the immediate pain of a disruption without addressing what caused it.

Four trends have emerged in the wake of the energy supply disruption in Birol’s assessment: a modest rise in coal consumption, renewed momentum behind nuclear, accelerating renewable deployment and growing electric vehicle adoption. Solar is the fastest-growing generation source, with wind close behind, and biofuels are gaining ground as elevated pump prices make them more commercially attractive.

Renewable expansion, Birol argued, is no longer driven primarily by climate commitments. Energy security has become an equally powerful motive as governments seek to reduce their reliance on imported fuel and build out domestic generation. The same logic applies to electric vehicles, which are gaining traction across markets as diverse as Brazil, Southeast Asia and Australia alongside the established European base. Breaking free of oil imports, Birol said, motivates EV uptake as much as any climate argument.

On both counts, China’s contribution is the one that stands out. Roughly six in every ten new vehicles sold domestically are now electric, a penetration rate no other major market has come close to matching. Considering China’s massive population, this means the Asian economic powerhouse is adding millions to tens of millions of new electric cars to its roads annually.

Beyond its own transformation, the country’s manufacturing scale across solar panels, batteries and electric vehicles has compressed costs globally and given the broader transition a speed it would not otherwise have reached. China now supplies a vast majority of the world’s green energy infrastructure and has been instrumental in granting developing nations access to low-cost solar panels, making it increasingly integral to an equitable energy transition.

Coupled with the efforts of green energy firms like Turbo Energy S.A. (NASDAQ: TURB), the clean energy technologies coming from China seem poised to play an even bigger role in accelerating the transition to renewable energy.
