Energy Ministers from Canada and Turkey have signed a deal that enters both countries into a strategic bilateral partnership focused on renewable energy, nuclear energy, and liquefied natural gas (LNG). Canada’s Minister of Energy & Natural Resources Timothy Hodgson met with Turkey’s Minister of Energy & Natural Resources during an Istanbul summit and signed the cooperation statement in the presence of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The cooperation statement comes at a time of major upheaval across most international energy supply chains. Geopolitical tensions and all-out warfare in some of the most energy-rich regions of the world coupled with market volatility, economic fragmentation, surging AI-driven energy demand, and the ever-present threat of climate change are driving profound change in the global energy sector.
Countries that were reliant on energy imports have been grappling with rising energy prices for years and are now scrambling to diversify their energy supplies. Renewables and nuclear energy can help nations like Canada and Turkey limit energy imports and produce most of their electricity domestically, reducing their exposure to volatility in global energy supply chains. According to the two energy ministers, the cooperation deal will build ‘bilateral cooperation’ based on each country’s complementary strengths to make their energy segments more resilient.
There will be a significant focus on defense and security, trade and investment, and energy and people-to-people relations, top officials say. Greater amounts of LNG would flow from Canada to Turkey to help the West Asian nation avoid global supply constraints and increase its energy security. Both energy ministers also noted that nuclear energy could play a major role in enhancing domestic energy production, meeting clean energy objectives, and bolstering economic growth.
The past couple of years have made it abundantly clear that reliance on imported fossil fuels is one of the greatest threats to a country’s national and energy security, making alternatives like solar, wind, and nuclear critical energy components. Under their agreement, Canada and Turkey will explore different opportunities to cooperate in civil nuclear energy using nuclear technology developed in Canada.
Ministers Bayraktar and Hodgson also noted how clean technologies like electric cars and renewable energy would push the world closer to net zero emissions, with renewables playing a significant role in safeguarding global supply chains, building more diversity into national energy mixes, and boosting electric grid stability. Consequently Canada and Turkey will pursue investments and development in renewables like geothermal technologies alongside carbon capture and storage.
With more countries recognizing that accelerating the energy transition yields multiple dividends, firms like Geosolar Technologies Inc. in the renewable energy industry could leverage this awareness to deepen their penetration of those markets.
