Top US Academic Journal Crowns Renewables Surge as 2025’s Biggest Breakthrough

A prominent American research publication has crowned surging renewable energy adoption as 2025’s top scientific achievement. The Thursday announcement by the journal Science credited China with spearheading the worldwide shift toward cleaner electricity generation methods. 2025 brought a significant transition as clean energy, mostly captured through solar arrays and wind installations, started displacing traditional sources across various metrics, the publication reported in its annual review.

Global clean power capacity grew fast enough to satisfy all new electricity demand globally during the initial six months of the year. It also overtook coal-fired generation worldwide, representing a watershed moment in power production history that marks a departure from fossil fuel energy sources like coal, oil and natural gas that have dominated energy systems since the industrial age.

China’s manufacturing might was primarily responsible for propelling this worldwide transformation forward. Following prolonged sector development via financial support and industrial policy, China now controls most international clean energy technology manufacturing, Science observed.

Chinese factories produce 80% of global photovoltaic cells, 70% of turbine equipment, and over 70% of lithium storage units at costs rivals struggle to approach in global markets.

Photovoltaic equipment purchases have surged across African and South Asian markets as residents increasingly rely on rooftop installations for cheap illumination, telecommunications and cooling devices independently of utility infrastructure connections. Many analysts view continued expansion as inevitable given these economic advantages, prompting Science’s selection of renewable acceleration as its premier 2025 achievement, the journal stated in its announcement.

Chinese clean technology shipments reshape international markets beyond its borders as well. European nations purchase these products consistently, while developing economies acquire Chinese photovoltaic panels, storage systems and turbines driven by economic factors and aspirations for supply autonomy from traditional energy sources, the journal indicated.

Renewable energy generation contributed to nearly halting carbon emission increases within China this year while making worldwide emission peaks achievable for the first time in modern history.

However, substantially reducing emissions demands viewing this year’s milestones as initial steps rather than endpoints in the transition process toward carbon neutrality, the publication stressed in its assessment. As such, achieving meaningful climate goals will require sustained effort beyond current achievements.

Additional notable achievements Science recognized this year include precision genetic modification techniques that enabled targeted DNA alterations, dual pharmaceutical treatments for bacterial infections that have developed antibiotic resistance, innovative telescope designs capturing unprecedented optical information volumes from distant cosmic sources, large language systems supporting laboratory investigations across multiple scientific disciplines, and crop varieties that can withstand elevated temperatures caused by climate change that threaten global food security.

Innovations like those championed by enterprises like EverGen Infrastructure Corp. (TSX.V: EVGN) (OTCQX: EVGIF) are likely to play an increasing role in moving countries away from the worst polluting fuels to cleaner alternatives over the coming years.
