Wars Are Accelerating the Renewable Energy Transition

Major armed conflicts in Europe and the Middle East are accelerating the world’s transition to renewable energy by exposing existential vulnerabilities in the global energy ecosystem. In Europe, countries spent years becoming reliant on cheap natural gas imports from Russia before the Kremlin pulled the rug out from under them after the invasion of Ukraine and left them searching desperately for alternatives.

Israel and the United States’ attack on Iran, and the subsequent closure of the Hormuz Strait was the final nail in the coffin as constrained oil supplies caused prices to surge.

These factors are shining a light on the benefits of decentralized and localized energy supplies that aren’t reliant on international supply chains. Conflict and wars in oil-producing regions won’t have an outsized effect on a country that produces most of its energy locally, while nations that rely on imported fuel will have to dig deeper and deeper into their pockets to pay for the same amount of fuel.

Furthermore, using decentralized green energy sources, rather than large production plants and complex worldwide logistics, makes their energy supply chains significantly less vulnerable to outside players.

European nations that weren’t as reliant on exported Russian fuel were less affected by oil and gas shortages when Russia cut natural gas supplies to its European customers. By Q1 2026, the European Union sourced 45% of its energy from renewables as member states worked to fortify their grids against volatility in international energy markets.

Beijing has also made significant green energy investments in recent years, not just due to climate commitments, but in response to economic and security factors arising from the conflicts in Ukraine and Iran.

The goal has been to protect its energy supplies from international volatility and China largely succeeded in its efforts. The country, which produces more green energy than any other country, fared much better while other nations were forced to pay increasingly higher prices for imported fuel.

Things didn’t go as well in the United States, unfortunately. Unlike China and several other European countries that have passed pro-green energy policies, the U.S. government is actively working against renewables. President Trump once declared that oil prices would ‘drop like a rock’ when the conflict with Iran concluded but Americans now have to contend with price hikes and fuel shortages.

Domestically produced clean energy could allow the U.S. to weather international energy market volatility with significantly less financial strain and insulate it from hostile foreign actors. That resilience is exactly what firms like GeoSolar Technologies Inc. are doing their best to help create despite the unsupportive policy environment.
