Clean-Energy Jobs to Abound for Gen Z

While some have claimed that the green-energy transition could have a negative impact on American employment, the nascent renewable energy sector actually has the potential to provide plenty of employment opportunities for Gen Z. A recently launched initiative called the American Climate Corps is already providing young Americans with hundreds of employment opportunities in the emerging green sector.

Inaugurated by the Biden administration in September 2023, the program will pay hundreds of Gen Z’ers in the country to help develop climate solutions across the country. The program will eventually facilitate the installation of more than 20,000 people in internships, fellowships and jobs that will put them on the path to joining the green-energy workforce.

Over the next decade, the generation of Americans currently aged 12 to 27 years of age could benefit from the creation of at least five million new clean-energy jobs.

Although only 273 jobs are available via the Climate Corps at the moment — with some of those jobs having extremely tight application deadlines — the program will provide more opportunities for young Americans. Employees will be paid to combat climate change in the country by learning how to fight wildfires, install solar panels and rebuild ruined wetlands. These initiatives and others aimed at protecting the environment and developing a clean-energy economy were outlined by President Joseph Biden at the recent Earth Day event when he announced the open positions at the Climate Corps.

President Biden’s announcement comes as America ramps up its climate-change mitigation efforts amid increased incidences of extreme weather and environmental disasters that have impacted people’s homes, health and livelihood. In recent years, sudden extreme cold left hundreds of thousands of Texans with no power for days in the middle of winter while numerous wildfires have caused immense harm to the environment.

For the Biden administration, one of the key aspects of championing green energy has been ensuring that renewables have a positive economic effect, especially in communities with a greater dependence on fossil fuels or fossil fuel-powered vehicles. As such, the administration will focus on creating new jobs and career pathways for young Americans entering the workforce, empowering them to aid in the country’s transition to clean energy.

Modeled on the Civilian Conservation Corps formed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Climate Corps will offer young Americans opportunities in clean energy and other sectors such as urban areas, food systems, public lands and waters, and capacity building. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said at the Earth Day event that the young people who join the American Climate Corps will play a role in the climate change fight, help build a “just economy,” and develop into “profoundly influential leaders” in the United States.

The green jobs envisioned will materialize sooner if green-energy metal extractors such as First Tellurium Corp. (CSE: FTEL) (OTCQB: FSTTF) obtain sufficient supplies of metals onto the market and those are used to generate and store the clean energy needed to address the energy needs of the world.
