Freight trains could be used to circumvent grid connection bottlenecks by hauling batteries filled with renewable energy across the country. Despite a massive increase in America’s green energy capacity, a significant portion of the country’s renewable energy still isn’t connected to the grid due to transmission and interconnection bottlenecks. Instead of waiting several years to connect to the grid, green energy projects could deliver their energy to end users via freight train.
This is possible due to battery technology advancements that have made modern batteries smaller, more compact, energy-dense, and safer. Stakeholders have poured billions of dollars into researching and developing new energy storage solutions to build more efficient electric vehicle batteries and combat renewable energy intermittency. As a result, modern batteries can store more energy, occupy less space, cost less, and are considerably safer than batteries developed just a few years ago.
Freight train companies may also be more willing to transport fully charged batteries now that newer battery designs carry a significantly reduced fire risk. Lithium-ion battery fires are more intense than regular fires, require much more water to extinguish, and can cause extensive damage if they ignite on a moving freight train. Leveraging battery chemistries that are less flammable and more stable could make freight companies more confident in moving renewable energy via rail.
Last December, a startup called SunTrain revealed a plan that involved recharging batteries using solar and wind energy when electricity prices were low and using freight trains to haul the batteries to remote sites and locations that had high electricity demand but lacked adequate grid capacity. Dubbed the “mobile peaker plant” business model, the concept was partly inspired by a 2023 U.S. Department of Energy study on the national electrical grid.
The transmission study estimated that America’s transmission system would need to double to 115,000 gigawatt-miles by 2040, a feat requiring massive investment in transformers, new power lines, and related infrastructure. Instead of spending billions extending the transmission grid, the renewable energy industry could use the country’s existing 140,000-mile freight railway network to transport clean energy from wind, solar, and other sources to end users in cities and industrial zones.
With an expansive rail network and established rights-of-way through most industrial corridors and populated regions, the U.S. freight system could become a vital energy logistics network. Using electric freight cars to transport the energy would make the process even more sustainable, but eliminating diesel from freight trains remains a major challenge. Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies Corporation (Wabtec), based in Pennsylvania, is developing all-electric locomotives that could drastically reduce diesel emissions.
Meanwhile, Pennsylvania-based startup Voltify is working on a hybrid solution that allows freight haulers to continue using their diesel-electric locomotives. Their concept involves generating traction power using battery packs within freight cars and reserving diesel generators for backup use only. This strategy could help reduce emissions without requiring immediate, large-scale investments in new electric locomotives.
Efforts being directed towards electrifying trains come at a time when vehicle electrification has progressed to such a degree that fossil fuel-powered vehicles look set to be phased out. Manufacturers like Mullen Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ: MULN) have commercialized several EV models and users off-grid could benefit if trains start hauling clean energy to charge EVs in those remote locations.
