Google, Energy Dome Partner to Deploy Advanced Renewable Energy Storage Globally

Google has teamed up with energy storage startup Energy Dome to deploy advanced renewable energy storage infrastructure worldwide and help address one of the key problems facing renewables: intermittency.

The tech giant recently signed a long-term agreement with the Italian energy storage company that will see Google support Energy Dome’s deployment of its advanced long-duration energy storage (LDES) technology on a global scale, providing one of the critical resources needed to facilitate the transition from fossil fuels to renewable alternatives.

Intermittency is one of the main challenges involved in adopting renewables like solar and wind energy. Although they are significantly cleaner than fossil fuels, these sources cannot be relied on to produce energy round the clock. However, pairing them with energy storage effectively solves the intermittency problem by storing energy generated during peak production and releasing it into the grid when demand rises.

The LDES solution deployed by Energy Dome will enable 24/7 energy output from renewable energy projects across the world, even when conditions needed to produce that energy aren’t being met.

According to the agreement, Google will support several commercial deployments of the energy storage startup’s LDES technology in strategic geographical areas such as the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe. The tech giant has also made a strategic investment in Energy Dome, a startup launched in 2019 with the goal of expanding renewable energy use through its CO₂ battery.

Google’s partnership with Energy Dome complements its recent foray into renewable energy production to provide clean power for its increasingly energy-intensive cloud and AI operations.

Energy Dome’s CO₂ battery uses excess renewable energy to keep carbon dioxide in a liquid state at ambient temperature. The battery provides electricity when the liquid carbon dioxide is warmed up, expands, and spins a turbine. This approach allows the system to continuously generate electricity for 24 hours, surpassing the performance of lithium-ion batteries currently used in renewable energy storage.

Compared to the CO₂ battery, lithium-ion batteries are far more limited in their ability to store and dispatch electricity over extended periods.

Energy Dome founder and CEO Claudio Spadacini says that deploying the company’s battery technology at scale to help Google achieve carbon-free operations is at the heart of their agreement with the American tech giant. The rollout will prove that with the right partnership model and technology, a 24/7 supply of affordable, carbon-free electricity is within reach, Spadacini says.

Google’s Director of EMEA Energy, Maud Texier, notes that the company is committed to eliminating fossil fuel-fired energy from its operations and that the partnership with Energy Dome will help accelerate that goal. She says that in addition to achieving carbon neutrality, Google hopes its support will help Energy Dome scale its LDES technology, making it easier for communities worldwide to access affordable and reliable green energy while strengthening global grid resilience through greater renewable integration.

As more of these advanced energy storage systems are deployed, the supply of reliable renewable energy will increase and support other industries, such as electric vehicles from firms like Bollinger Innovations, Inc. (NASDAQ: BINI), to deepen their eco-friendly benefits when charged using clean energy.
