As the world seeks solutions that will enable it to transition from fossil fuels to cleaner alternatives, white hydrogen could provide an additional low-carbon option in the green energy transition. Also referred to as geologic or natural hydrogen, white hydrogen is naturally occurring hydrogen that forms through natural processes. Green hydrogen, on the other hand, is produced using energy-intensive processes such as electrolysis, while blue hydrogen needs carbon capture, another energy-intensive process.
Since it forms naturally with no human input, white hydrogen has been gaining popularity as an alternative source of clean energy. This source of energy could be extracted from naturally forming underground deposits with little emissions and deployed where it is needed. Compared to green and blue hydrogen, white hydrogen is a much more efficient and affordable alternative that occurs naturally without human intervention or financial investment.
As a result, governments, energy giants, and startups are growing increasingly interested in white hydrogen as an alternative source of clean energy. It has significant potential as a low-cost, zero-carbon, and abundant source of energy, and even though it still has a long way to go before it is commercially viable, it could be a great addition to the world’s green energy mix. As a diverse set of green energy sources will be key to achieving global carbon neutrality, white hydrogen can increase the number of available options and help lower the costs involved in transitioning to renewables.
Geologic processes such as radiolysis and water-rock reactions are primarily responsible for generating white hydrogen, and the renewable fuel is typically found in subterranean pockets. This makes it one of the most environmentally-friendly sources of energy and gives it a major edge over other renewables in terms of carbon intensity and cost. Green hydrogen may be a renewable source of energy, but the amount of energy required to produce it, and the carbon emissions produced in generating said energy and during the green hydrogen production process, make it less clean than white hydrogen.
With sectors such as power generation, transportation, and heavy industry steadily increasing their demand for hydrogen, white hydrogen could play a key role in these sectors without causing a rise in carbon emissions or affecting energy demand. A joint research program involving the Colorado School of Mines, the U.S. Geological Survey, and several large energy companies is currently studying geologic hydrogen formations while several companies have either raised funds for or begun exploring for white hydrogen deposits.
Although still in its early stages, white hydrogen’s unique combination of natural abundance, low emissions, and affordability makes it an increasingly viable part of the world’s energy future. As research and commercial interest accelerate, this naturally occurring gas could help ease the shift to clean energy and offer a practical solution to some of the challenges facing full-scale renewable adoption.
The energy generated from white hydrogen could even be stored using systems from numerous companies like SolarBank Corp. (NASDAQ: SUUN) (Cboe CA: SUNN) (FSE: GY2) in case that energy isn’t immediately required at the time it is generated.
