As the world races to transition away from fossil fuels, such as oil and natural gas, to renewable alternatives such as solar, innovation will be key to ensuring that the young green-energy industry has a future. Dozens of countries have already made significant progress in the transition, particularly in Europe, and the costs involved in building solar photovoltaic (PV) modules have dropped by more than 95% over the past several decades.
Solar energy accounts for the majority of the world’s green-energy capacity, followed by wind, thermal, hydropower and nuclear energy. While scientists are working hard to optimize solar technology and convert more of the sun’s energy to electricity, additional technologies are needed to ensure we can take full advantage of solar energy.
Stationary storage to make up for solar’s intermittent nature, coupled with transformers to optimize storage systems, will be among the most critical technologies. These will ensure that energy generated during peak production times can be stored and distributed to households when energy demand surges. Transformers will be key to transmitting electricity from storage facilities to households, particularly over long distances.
Furthermore, transformers improve consistency and performance by maximizing electricity flow. Smart transformers can help eliminate energy waste and ensure consistency by directing excess energy from rooftop solar panels into the energy grid and distributing it to nearby buildings. Greater public reliance on solar energy would also reduce pressure on the grid by reducing the number of people who consume grid energy at night when demand is high.
However, this will need sufficient and efficient storage capacity coupled with smart transformers to transmit the energy consistently. More advanced smart transformers would be 5% more efficient with five to six faster response times compared to standard transformers; they would also help to increase energy volume availability by 40%. In addition, they could also cut the amount of energy lost during electricity conversion by 400 gigawatt hours.
On the other hand, it would be more cost effective and environmentally friendly to refurbish existing transformers for solar-energy storage because it would lower manufacturing expenses as well as waste. Refurbished transformers feature faster lead times and are a great means of alleviating the pressing need for green-energy storage.
Both smart and refurbished transformers reduce the risk of surges, voltage spikes and grid disruptions, improving the dependability and overall safety of solar-energy storage. These transformers are also scalable and adaptable, easily adapting to different voltage requirements, configuring large-scale or residential systems, and serving a variety of energy needs.
Innovation is also playing out in developing novel energy sources as exemplified by various companies that are commercializing hydrogen-energy systems and other green-energy technologies, such as FuelPositive Corp. (TSX.V: NHHH) (OTCQB: NHHHF).
