With tech companies pouring tens of billions of dollars into constructing massive data center complexes to support their AI ambitions, there has been a major outcry about greenhouse gas emissions. AI data centers consume tons of energy, with companies like Google, Amazon, and Meta channeling enough energy to power large cities into their data centers.
Most environmentalists agree that these facilities should draw most, if not all, of their energy from renewable sources to limit their emissions. Some data centers are already heavily dependent on renewable energy.
In São Paulo, Brazil, Scala Data Center uses 100% green energy at its Tambore Campus. This renewable energy is mostly sourced via PPAs (power purchase agreements) with solar and wind farms. Another campus in Verona, Wisconsin, owned by Epic Systems, uses a network of 6,100 geothermal boreholes for temperature control, alongside solar panels and wind turbines.
Tapping into renewables allows these energy-hungry data centers to run without putting significant strain on the grid, especially if the energy is produced in-house or sourced from new renewable energy production facilities.
Without data centers drawing huge amounts of energy from the grid, households won’t be forced to pay higher energy prices, an unfortunate issue that’s currently affecting countless Americans across the country. However, connecting the rapidly expanding data center segment exclusively to renewables won’t be an easy task.
Three main challenges stand in the way; first, renewable energy just won’t be enough to meet projected energy demand from data centers. Second, data center facilities will have to invest in energy storage or backup supply to address renewable energy intermittency and ensure they have enough energy to meet demand 24/7.
Furthermore, grid connection delays and long connection queues are holding back development of new green energy projects that can meet the growing demand for energy from data centers. More than 2,600 GW of renewable energy and storage are awaiting grid connection in the U.S. alone, with some already waiting for years. As long as these resources cannot connect to the grid and deliver their energy, data centers will have a significantly smaller pool to draw from.
Many environmentalists fear that this could result in a resurgence in fossil fuel use as dozens of massive data centers across the globe turn to fossil-fuel-fired energy to power their facilities, making it nearly impossible to meet zero-emission targets and exacerbating climate change.
Renewable energy industry players like Turbo Energy S.A. (NASDAQ: TURB) may have to come up with innovative ways to bring projects online swiftly so that they can tap the market opportunities availed by the data center boom.
